Jakarta – Minister of Research and Technology/Chairman of National Agency for Research and Innovation Bambang Brodjonegoro requested the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) to focus on the more massive development of Indonesian satellite. He expected LAPAN to prioritize the satellite development and the mastery of the monitoring technology which are not only communication system strengthening but also safety and commercial matters.
“We are hoping the mastery of technology so LAPAN will have to put the focus on satellites and prioritize it. Of course we expected the satellites that will have big capacity bot only for defense needs but also the commercial one,” said Minister Bambang on his speech in the National Coordinating Meeting of the 2020 Remote Sensing Satellite Imagery in Sari Pan Pacific, Jakarta (28/1).
Minister Bambang mentioned that Indonesia is currently depending on the providers or satellite owners from abroad, so we still import the services of satellites utilization from abroad. Minister Bambang expected Indonesia to be able to improve national abilities to provide satellites imagery, so we could maximize the national independence to utilize satellites, which should be achieved by fulfilling domestic needs.
“We have many features and advantages as a country located on the equator. Besides our tropical climate and stable rainfall and temperature, we also have other features. Indonesia is a strategic location to build the aerospace for rocket launches,” he explained.
Minister Bambang also claimed that Indonesia need to own and develop a technology for the advancement and the security of the state. For example is the drones. He mentioned that, in the future, Indonesia through the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) should be focusing on drone technology which will be the trends.
The Head of LAPAN Thomas Djamaluddin confirmed that Minister Bambang has directed LAPAN to focus on satellite development, supported by drone development, because satellite and drone are one integral part for monitoring system. He stated that LAPAN is the coordinator of satellite development program in the 2020-2024 National Research Priority, which is to make the low-orbit communication satellite constellation.
“On the national research priority, it will not only consists of the communication satellite, but the satellite for remote sensing will also be the continuous program,” he said.
On the same occasion, LAPAN also launched the newest website-based and mobile app-based information system to monitor land and forest fires. The Head of LAPAN Thomas stated that satellite imagery is currently a necessity that we must have for detail spatial planning, development, early detection of disasters, and environmental damage including emergency responses when disasters occur.
“Regarding disasters, we can give early warning for forest fires potential. We also provide LAPAN application of fire hotspot, which locates the heat coordinates that could become the cause of forest fires,” he said.
Also attending the event is the stakeholders from various R&D from related ministries and government institutions.
